Brake Rotors
When it comes to reliable braking for your Mazda, your brake rotors make all the difference. Essentially, your rotors are the metallic plates, or discs, located behind your car's wheels. They are one of the three main brake components that help slow and stop your vehicle when applying the brake.
As you may already know, when you press the brake pedal, your calipers engage the attached brake pads into the rotor discs. Usually made of iron or other durable metallic alloys, the most common brake rotor designs are smooth, drilled, slotted, and drilled and slotted. Smooth rotors are the most common and durable for the long run-on commuter cars. Sportier car models will tend to use drilled and slotted rotors for the sake of more enhanced braking performance.
Over time and after extended use, typically above 70,000 miles on most cars, brake rotors will require an exchange. When they go bad, they tend to become ineffective by losing surface grip for the pads. This could be from scrapes and gouges on the surface, chipping, or bending. If your rotors are damaged, change them ASAP. Not doing so can lead to more damage to your brake system.
